Digital humanities

Digital humanities ( DH ) is an area of scholarly activity at the intersection of computing or digital technologies and the disciplines of the humanities . It includes the systematic use of digital resources in the humanities , as well as the reflection on their application. [1] [2] DH can be defined as new ways of doing scholarship that involve collaborative, transdisciplinary, and computationally engaged research, teaching, and publishing. [3] It brings digital tools and methods to the study of the humanities with the recognition that the printed word is no longer the main medium for knowledge production and distribution. [3]

Digital humanities is an area of research and teaching at the intersection of computing and the disciplines of the humanities . Developing from the fields of humanities computing, humanistic computing, [2] and digital humanities praxis, [3] digital humanities embraces a variety of topics, from curating online collections to data mining large cultural data sets. Digital humanities (often abbreviated DH) incorporates both digitized and born-digital materials and combines the methodologies from traditional humanities disciplines (such as history , philosophy , linguistics , literature , art , archaeology , music , and cultural studies ) and social sciences, [4] with tools provided by computing (such as Hypertext , Hypermedia , data visualisation , information retrieval , data mining , statistics , text mining , digital mapping ), and digital publishing . The definition of the "digital humanities" is something that is being continually formulated by scholars and practitioners; they ask questions and demonstrate through projects and collaborations with others. Collaboration is a major part of DH, with not only scholars sharing their research with other scholars, but with ongoing DH projects, the public can share their ideas about different topics with each other and learn from each other's opinion.

As well, related subfields of digital humanities have emerged like software studies , platform studies, and critical code studies . Digital Humanities also intersects with new media studies and information science as well as media theory of composition and game studies , particularly in areas related to digital humanities project design and production.

The digital humanities , sometimes also known as humanities computing , is a field of study, research, teaching, and invention concerned with the intersection of computing and the disciplines of the humanities . It is methodological by nature and interdisciplinary in scope. It involves investigation, analysis, synthesis and presentation of information in electronic form. It studies how these media affect the disciplines in which they are used, and what these disciplines have to contribute to our knowledge of computing. Academic departments of the digital humanities typically include technical practitioners as well as traditionally trained scholars with experience or expertise in digital media . Such departments tend to be heavily involved in collaborative research projects with colleagues in other departments.

The Digital Humanities , also known as Humanities Computing , is a synthetic field of study concerned with the presentation of Humanities knowledge using new media as well as with the effects this new media has upon the conceptualization, manipulation and preferencing of knowledge. As an academic department, it typically includes individuals from a programming background and traditional humanities scholars who happen to have experience or expertise in digital media ; as well as creating methodologies specific to electronic publication and the fundamental changes that new technology brings to modern humanities scholarship.
