Cassette tape

The Compact Audio Cassette ( CAC ) or Musicassette ( MC ), also commonly called the cassette tape or simply tape or cassette , is an analog magnetic tape recording format for audio recording and playback . It was developed by Philips in Hasselt , Belgium , and released in 1962. [2] Compact cassettes come in two forms, either already containing content as a prerecorded cassette, or as a fully recordable "blank" cassette. Both forms are reversible by the user. [3]

The Compact Cassette or Musicassette ( MC ), also commonly called cassette tape , audio cassette , or simply tape or cassette , is a magnetic tape recording format for audio recording and playback released by Philips in 1962, developed in Hasselt , Belgium . [2] Compact cassettes come in two forms, either already containing content as a pre-recorded cassette, or as a fully recordable "blank" cassette. It was designed originally for dictation machines , but improvements in fidelity led the Compact Cassette to supplant the Stereo 8-track cartridge and reel-to-reel tape recording in most non-professional applications. [3] Its uses ranged from portable audio to home recording to data storage for early microcomputers . The first cassette player (although mono) designed for use in car dashes was introduced in 1968. Between the early 1970s and the early 2000s, the cassette was one of the two most common formats for prerecorded music, first alongside the LP record and later the compact disc (CD). [4] [ where? ]

The compact audio cassette medium for audio storage was introduced by Philips in 1963 under the name Compact Cassette . Although there were other magnetic tape cartridge systems at the time, the Compact Cassette became dominant as a result of Philips' decision (in the face of pressure from Sony ) to license the format free of charge. It went on to become a popular (and re-recordable ) alternative to the vinyl record deck during the 1970s . During the 1980s , its popularity grew further as a result of the Sony Walkman .

The compact audio cassette audio storage medium was introduced by Philips in 1963 . It consists of a length of magnetic tape from BASF inside a protective plastic shell. Four tracks are available on the tape, giving two stereo tracks – one for playing with the cassette inserted with its 'A' side up, and the other with the 'B' side up, thus mimicking gramophone records . There were other magnetic tape cartridge systems at the time, but the compact cassette succeeded through Philips's backing. The mass production of compact audio cassettes began in 1965 in Hanover , Germany , as did commercial sales of prerecorded music cassettes, known as musicassettes or MC for short.

On the grounds of convenience, this was a massive step forward from reel-to-reel recording, though the limitations of the cassette's size and speed compared poorly in quality. Unlike the open reel format, the two stereo tracks lie adjacent to each other rather than a 1/3 and 2/4 arrangement. The tape is 3.175 mm wide (an eighth of an inch) and moves at 47.625 mm/s (1 7 / 8 inch).
